Abstract

Landscape photography is one of the most significant genres in the history of art and photography as well. By examining and comparing contemporary approaches to landscape photography in Iran and Northern Europe, this study particularly seeks to investigate the nature of landscape within these two geographical contexts through several key questions: How has landscape photography been formulated in each region? What conceptual and cultural frameworks have informed its production? Furthermore, how do cultural—and at times national—configurations operate within these images? Employing an analytical and comparative method, this research juxtaposes the cultural signifiers embedded in this photographic genre in Iran and Northern Europe, encouraging deep reflection on the characteristics of landscape photography in Iran and in a geographically and culturally distinct region. In this regard, Max Weber’s methodological framework of the Ideal Type—an analytical construct designed to compare and examine differences, similarities, and discontinuities within historical and cultural realities—provides a suitable theoretical foundation for the study. Drawing upon various landscape theories, the research demonstrates how contemporary Iranian landscape photographers have symbolically engaged with the national dimensions of landscape, while their Northern European counterparts have predominantly emphasized representations of untouched nature, focusing on the formal qualities of landscape and its relationship to national identity. The article first analyzes the cultural, social, and geographical characteristics of each region and subsequently undertakes a comparative investigation of how nature and landscape function as instruments for articulating national identity in contemporary landscape photography in Iran and Northern Europe. It also incorporates prior scholarship in landscape photography and cultural theory to situate the artistic and cultural positions of these two regions within the contemporary global context. Landscape photography in Northern Europe is deeply rooted in Romantic traditions and materialist perspectives on nature. In contrast, in Iran, it is often shaped by notions such as geographical destiny and a historically embedded interaction with the environment. These foundational differences manifest not only in visual styles and photographic techniques but also in the underlying philosophies of landscape representation. Particularly in the present era—when climate change and social transformations have shifted the representation of nature from a purely aesthetic subject to a political and cultural concern—analyzing such images can foster a broader understanding of how different cultures engage with the environment, history, and collective narratives. As photography functions as a powerful visual language in the construction and communication of identities and cultural narratives in the contemporary world, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of how cultural identity is shaped through landscape photography and how this process influences perceptions of nature and the environment in these two regions. In this sense, landscape photography, as a cultural and social medium, offers a platform for expressing transformations of identity and for representing the historical relationship between humans and nature. Ultimately, through the examination of selected case studies and the application of the Ideal Type as an analytical framework, this study seeks to identify and analyze the similarities and differences in contemporary landscape photography across these two geographical contexts.
