Abstract

Art and craftsmanship in Islamic civilization have always been inextricably linked with wisdom and ethical conduct. Practical wisdom, centered on social ethics and the regulation of behavior in social activities, is regarded by thinkers such as Khwaja Nasir al-Din al-Tusi as an inseparable component of human social life. In this context, the treatise Maalim al-Qurba fi Aḥkam al-Ḥisba, as a document emerging from Islamic civilization, reveals the concern of past societies to actualize practical wisdom within the framework of trades and industries. This work, focusing on the institution of Hisba, articulates ethical guidelines and regulatory obligations for widely practiced crafts such as textile production and garment manufacturing, taking a thoroughly practical and case-based approach to institutionalizing wisdom. The Hisba was considered one of the fundamental pillars for ensuring justice, social order and adherence to religious regulations in Islamic cities. The muḥtasib, as the overseer of the proper conduct of social, economic, and ethical affairs within the community, played a key role in achieving these objectives. The content of the aforementioned book is based on Islamic legal rulings and is presented in a practical and tangible manner through examples from various crafts and professions. The analysis of such texts is significant because it enables the identification of the jurisprudential and ethical principles governing each profession. This study seeks to answer the following question: Based on Maalim al-Qurba, how did practical wisdom manifest in the ethical framework of the textile industry in the 7th century AH and according to what criteria?. Grounded in the aforementioned text, this study analyzes the manifestations of practical wisdom and the criteria of social ethics in textile-related occupations, categorized as part of the traditional Islamic arts. This research is a developmental study. Data were gathered through documentary methods and analyzed using descriptive-analytical techniques. The primary focus of this study is the content analysis of the Persian-translated version of the source text, published under the title "The Regulations of City Governance in the Seventh Century AH" Furthermore, as the research is framed within the theoretical paradigm of Islamic practical wisdom, Akhlaq-i Naṣeri by Nasir al-Din al-Tusi has been utilized as the main philosophical source for conceptual analysis. The findings reveal that practical wisdom within textile-related professions is manifested through four main dimensions: product, people, supervision, and business environment. Each of these dimensions encompasses key elements of professional ethics that must be monitored and upheld by supervisory institutions. Ensuring product quality and adherence to professional standards, protecting public rights by preventing various forms of injustice, the ethical functioning of regulatory bodies, and the preservation of dignity and integrity in business interactions all constitute central components of practical wisdom in the textile trades. According to these indicators, the structural dissemination of practical wisdom in professions is based on the interconnection of three elements: ethics, specialization, and social order. Within this conceptual framework, none of these components are viewed as merely individual obligations; rather, they are considered social responsibilities and structural necessities for maintaining the integrity of the Islamic economic system.
